Current Research Topic:

Michael’s research focuses on the heterogeneously catalyzed convergence of lignin depolymerization products into a single, value-added product stream.  Using a novel combination of hydrodeoxygenation and cracking chemistry, highly substituted aromatic rings are upgraded to phenol for bulk chemical production.  In order to properly develop this process, the microkinetics, deactivation, and regeneration of the catalysts need to be well understood.
